I think part of the issue is a cultural misunderstanding between many Europeans and Americans. In Europe, being proud of being descended from English people, or Germans, or French, is insignificant. But, in a country as modern (relatively speaking) as America, it makes sense to have a greater awareness of one's cultural heritage. You're right. Most people like myself are rather proud of their heritage. For example. My great great grandfather was town constable in Germany. Then my great grandfather was part of the invasion of Austria and later invaded France and actually killed many Americans. My grandfather was a teenager when the war was over. Left for England. Married my nana in England and went to Hawaii as the first VW mechanic there. So as far as my lineage goes, my European roots are relatively recent. While I just shared that with you in detail, if it comes up I just say most of my family came from Germany. Intervening all the time in foreign countries. It's a gray area really. We don't do something and we are being greedy and neglecting and the entire UN looks to the US to do something about it. We do something and now we are intervening on everyone's business and being the "world police".
