This isn't quite the same position as American Exceptionalism. We're not special
people, and there's no reason that another country might not have ended up
occupying the same economic/cultural/political space. (China still might, if it
doesn't shake itself apart during its industrialization process.) But it's hard
to argue that the fickle turns of history haven't landed the US in a fairly
unique position in the world. Guns. People only hear about crazed mass
shooters and Baby Yoda I Don’t Care What Day It Is It’s Early I’m Grumpy I Want Pepsi

think we dont need guns. In the vast rural areas of America you do need guns.
When the closest sheriff is more than an hour away, you need a gun for personal
protection. When you want to fill your freezer, a gun and a $30 hunting permit
will get you a deer or three. When you are bored and the closest mall or movie
theater is an hour or so away, plinking with your .22 is a fun
activity. Cars can save someone's life by driving a sick/injured person to
a hospital, guns can save someone's life either by intimidating an aggressor
that they back off when they see it drawn (which happens way more often than
you'd expect) or righteously shooting someone in self defense if you have no
other option. Technically American civilians can own automatic capable
weapons, they just cost as much as a new car and require you to jump through
some legal hoops and they also have to be registered before May of 1986, though
there is a way around that with corporations and trusts but you still need to
pay the tax stamp and have the weapon registered.
